Anchorage in early fall feels like the moment a theater curtain lifts. The air sharpens, the mountains glow with autumn colors, and the whole landscape seems to hum with expectation. Our group gathered here before setting off, and right away the benefit of a small group became clear. Conversations flowed, questions were answered, and every stop felt curated rather than hurried.
Our first stretch of road took us along the Turnagain Arm, one of the most scenic drives in Alaska. The tides sweep in like they’re racing the mountains, and the light shifts in theatrical layers. It’s the kind of place that defies quick glances; you end up staring out the window like you’re trying to memorize the scenery.
Alyeska Resort: Alpine Calm and Sky-High ViewsWe made our way to Alyeska Resort, tucked below the Chugach Mountains. A glide up the famous tram felt like rising into an aerial cathedral: sweeping ridgelines, crisp air, and the quiet sense that Alaska’s wilderness is gently towering over you. It’s equal parts energizing and grounding.
Seward: Harbor + Whittier too = Charm and Glacier MajestyFrom there, we headed to Seward, a harbor town that always feels ready for its close-up. It was our jumping-off point for not one but two fjord and glacier cruises, each one a highlight reel of Alaska’s coastal magic. Think towering cliffs, floating ice, seals draped on rocks like nap-loving royalty, and glaciers that speak in thunderous cracks and deep rumbles. If you’re searching for unforgettable Alaska excursions, glacier cruising in Whittier and Seward should be at the top of your list.
Another standout experience was riding the Alaska Railroad with my fellow advisors. The windows framed one breathtaking stretch of wilderness after another: rivers tracing the valley floors, mountains closing in around us, and endless forests shifting into fall’s golden palette. Trains in Alaska don’t just move you; they host you.

We also visited a Seavey's Ididaride Facility, where the pups entertained us with their enthusiasm and impressive training routines. Learning how they’re prepared for winter races added a layer of cultural depth to the trip. They’re athletes, comedians, and charmers all at once - DO NOT MISS this opportunity while in the state!
Because Greatland Adventures loves showcasing local flavor, our days were threaded with fantastic meals. Cozy cafés, fresh seafood, and dishes that tasted like they were crafted with the landscape in mind. Good food always anchors a good trip, and these meals made each evening feel celebratory.
The Magic of Small-Group TravelWhat truly tied everything together was the small-group experience. With just a handful of travelers, we moved easily, asked questions freely, and enjoyed moments of unscripted wonder. Instead of feeling like tourists on a timeline, we felt like travelers being personally guided through Alaska’s highlights.
Alaska stays with you. And this time, it felt like it wanted to.
